Vocabulary Words: Profile, hieroglyphics, patterns

Materials: 12x18" white paper, markers, sharpies, gold tempera, turquoise tempera, flesh colored tempera, watercolors

Students begin by practicing drawing profiles. Then I distribute the 12x18" white paper. Draw a 1" border around the edges. Draw a vertical line 8 1/2" from the left for the profile. In the remaining space, divide into 2 1/2" sections. Draw the profile, adding a ceremonial headdress. Paint the headdress with the gold and turquoise. Paint the face flesh colored, then the background with watercolors. In the 2 1/2" sections I have the students write down their hobbies using hieroglyphics. Draw patterns in the borders. Color these with markers.
