Vocabulary Words: Value, Line Pattern, Variety, Balance, Overlap, Repetition

This design project always excites my 6th graders, and is a good introduction to later calligraphy projects. They love the challenge of creating values with a sharpie! For this project, I begin by showing the students how to draw "bubble" letters. We then draw the entire alphabet in bubble letters, changing the size and direction of the letters, using overlap, to add variety and interest. Draw line patterns in the background, repeating some patterns, drawing some lines thick, others thin, etc. When the background is filled, color the letters with markers.
