Materials: 12x18" blue paper, liquid tempera, brushes, water, glue, glitter, oil pastels
We began by looking at
VanGogh paintings so students could see the painterly effect, as well
as how sunflowers come in all warm colors. I then gave each student a
"puddle" of red, yellow, and orange tempera and a paintbrush. Students
painted flower shapes on their blue paper, dipping their brush into
different colors and allowing the paint to remain unblended. The
following class period I gave them brown and green tempera for the
centers and stems. For a more realistic effect we added highlights and
shadows to the stems and leaves with oil pastels. We then outlined our
flowers with glue and sprinkled gold glitter. Very cool!
